Visual artist Michal Czinege in residence at Temppelikatu in 2023.

The artist studio on Temppelikatu offers Finnish visual artists, or those permanently residing in Finland, the opportunity to live and work in Helsinki. The studio is intended for artists living outside the capital region.

For Residency Applicants

The Temppelikatu artist studio is owned by the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation and located in Töölö, Helsinki. It is intended for visual artists living outside the Helsinki metropolitan area, offering a place to live and work for a period of 6 to 12 months.

The artist receives access to a bright, high-ceilinged 76 m² studio apartment in central Etu-Töölö, at Temppelikatu 1 A. The open-plan apartment includes a lofted sleeping area, a kitchen, and a bathroom. It is fully furnished. The space is suitable for all types of artistic work that do not cause disturbance in a residential building. Please note: the studio is not wheelchair accessible.

In addition to the studio, the artist is granted a monthly working grant (€600 )to help cover living, travel, and material expenses. Selection and payment of the residency grant require that the artist both resides and works in the studio for the duration of the awarded residency period. Partners or family members may live in the apartment with the artist if needed. However, pets are not allowed, as the apartment is maintained as an allergy-friendly space.

Applications are submitted through the foundation’s online grant service during the application period. The next call for applications will be announced on this page and through the Foundation’s social media channels.

In evaluating applications, factors such as professionalism, the quality of the work and funding plan, and the relevance of spending time in Helsinki to the applicant’s artistic practice are considered. Applications are reviewed by the Visual Arts Committee of the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation.

Temppelikatu 1 represents the first phase of construction in Töölö after the era of villa settlements. The studio’s windows face the building’s inner courtyard and are not visible from the street.

The residency apartment is furnished, but there is flexibility to arrange the open space according to the artist’s preference.

History of the Artist Studio

The studio apartment is located on the sixth floor of a building in central Etu-Töölö, completed in 1913 and designed by architects Einar Sjöström and W.G. Palmqvist. The Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation acquired, renovated, and equipped the studio in 2007 to offer artists from outside the Helsinki metropolitan area an opportunity to work in the capital.

The space had already served as a working studio for Finnish visual artists long before it came into the Foundation’s ownership. Between 1915 and 2005, artists such as Mikko Oinonen, Verner Thomé, Aimo Kanerva, Carolus Enckell, and Matti Kujasalo worked in the studio.
